Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are very much like traditional metal braces, with one important difference; they’re almost invisible.
Braces, generally, have two working parts: the brackets that attach to the teeth and the wires that put pressure on the teeth through the brackets. With ceramic braces, the brackets are either tooth-colored or clear. The wires are also colored to match the teeth. The most obvious drawback of treatment with traditional braces has always been aesthetic; nobody wants to look like a metal-mouth. With ceramic braces, the metallic look is gone. The braces typically don’t show up in photographs at all.
Who might benefit from ceramic braces?
- Overbites, underbites, crossbites and more
- Gaps or spaces between teeth
- Crooked or misaligned teeth
Any Downsides?
There are a few disadvantages. First, the brackets can be easily stained by darker foods and beverages, so patients have to stay on top of oral hygiene. These braces are also more expensive than metal braces, and treatment with ceramic braces takes a bit longer than with metal. Also, this treatment option can be uncomfortable and difficult to keep clean, just like metal braces.
Other Options
There are other options, besides ceramic and metal. There are clear aligners and lingual braces, both of which also avoid the metal-mouth look. The choice, for most patients, comes down to a balancing act between aesthetics, comfort, and treatment needs.
